Greener Upon Thames is a London based grass roots not-for-profit environmental campaign group.

Why is Greener Upon Thames campaigning for a plastic-bag-free Olympics?
In the UK we use 13 billion plastic bags each year and worldwide the figure is closer to 500 billion. A voluntary scheme organised by DEFRA setting a target of a 50% reduction over a three year period has failed and UK plastic bag usage is on the increase again. Plastic waste is growing at an alarming rate: we have produced more plastic in the last 10 years than in the entire 20th Century and it uses 8% of our diminishing oil supplies. There is no ‘away’ in throwaway: it ends up in landfill and litters our marine environment and countryside, harming wildlife and is hazardous to human health. There are areas in the Pacific, larger than Texas, of ‘plastic islands’ where plastic particles outnumber plankton 6:1. Plastic bags are used on average for 12 minutes, but last in our environment for up to 1000 years.
