Sustainable Olympics an "Empty Promise"

GREENER UPON THAMES PRESS STATEMENT – 30 SEPTEMBER 2011

  Team Wales 1
Team London 2012 0

The London Olympic organisers have kicked into touch an outright plastic bag ban at the Olympics, called for by Greener Upon Thames. This, despite support from 90% of Londoners and recent concern by David Cameron that Government figures prove UK use is on the increase. Given that Wales is tackling this issue head on, with a plastic bag levy from 1st October 2011, Lord Coe’s claim that London 2012 will be “the first sustainable games” is looking an increasingly empty promise.

“If the 2012 Olympics are to be the greenest ever, then banning plastic bags is a prerequisite. They cause immense damage throughout the world, and absolutely symbolise the mindlessness of our throwaway society. I sincerely hope the Olympic organisers will show the rest of the UK what can be done by banning them altogether from the games.” Patron of Greener upon Thames, Zac Goldsmith MP.
